NYLON & DELRIN

Nylons (polyamides) were the first of the thermoplastic engineering resins. Property comparisons of commercial grades of nylons vary widely because so many formulations are available. Nylon 6/6 has the lowest permeability of the nylons by gasoline, mineral oil, and fluorocarbon refrigerants. The 6/10 and 6/12 types are used where lower moisture absorption is needed.

The automotive industry is the largest user of nylon resins. Good mechanical properties and resistance to heat and fuels make these materials suitable for mechanical and electrical hardware and under-the-hood components. Examples are: timing sprockets, speedometer gears, cooling fans, wire connectors, windshield wiper parts, door-latch hardware, molded fender extensions, steering-column lock housings, brake fluid reservoirs, bearings. In addition, nylon parts are used in business machines, appliances, and industrial equipment.

Low friction, good abrasion resistance, and the ability to operate without lubrication qualify nylons for such applications. Although lubrication improves performance of nylon bearings and wear surfaces, only intermittent lubrication is required.

INDUSTRIAL PLASTICS: ACETAL (DRLTIN OR CELCON)

Acetal resins are engineering thermoplastics based on fromaldehyde polymerization technology. These highly crsytalline resins are strong, rigid, and have good moisture, heat and solvent resistance. Acetals produced in the United States include homopolymers (Delrin by Dupont) and copolymers (Celcon, by Celanese). A copolymer is formed by the polymerizeration of two monomers. Because of the chemical make-up differences, do not substitiute one acetal for the other without considering the impact of the change.

Uses in automotice applications include fuel-system and seat belt compnents, steering columns, window support brackets and handles. Typical plumbing applications that have replaced brass or zinc compnents are shower heads, ballcocks, faucet cartridges and various fittings. Consumer items include quality toys, garden sprayers, stereo cassette parts, butane lighter bodies, zippers, and telephone components.
